Catalyst Foundation and COASIT (SA) have partnered to deliver ongoing, practical support to older members of Adelaide’s Italian community. As part of this initiative, Catalyst staff regularly attend three large COASIT social groups—visiting each group at least twice a month. We set up an approachable information table and bring laptops so we can meet with participants individually, answer questions, and provide immediate assistance where possible.
Our role is to engage directly with community members, taking the time to listen to their concerns, understand their barriers, and explore the challenges they may be experiencing in accessing aged care. Many older Italian Australians prefer in-person, familiar environments when seeking help, and this project ensures they can receive guidance in a culturally safe, trusted setting.
During each visit, we support participants to better understand the aged care system, navigate My Aged Care, and explore service options that will help them remain independent in their own homes. Our approach is centred on empowerment—providing clear information, respecting cultural preferences, and encouraging people to make informed choices about their care.
When someone requires more intensive guidance, we refer them to Catalyst Foundation’s Care Finder program, which specialises in supporting older people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.
This project aims to ensure that every participant in COASIT’s social programs receives personalised, one-on-one support to better understand and navigate the aged care system. By meeting regularly in familiar, trusted settings, we hope to reduce confusion, address barriers early, and build confidence in seeking help when it’s needed.
Our goal is that, by the end of the financial year, all participants feel informed, empowered and in control of their care choices. Ultimately, we want every individual to access the right services at the right time so they can continue living safely, independently and living their best possible lives at home.
