Respite care provides temporary support for people who are frail or have limited ability to live independently, either at home or in a facility. It also gives primary carers a break or support when they are unable to provide care. Respite can range from a few hours to several weeks, depending on individual needs, government approvals, and available subsidies, including support through the Aged Care Assessment Services, NDIS, or Carer Gateway.

Carers, often family members, provide unpaid care to children or adults with disability, illness, chronic conditions, or frailty. Caring can be rewarding but demanding, and carers may need advice, counselling, financial support, or breaks. The Carer Gateway (1800 422 737) provides information and guidance for accessing support options.
People who provide additional daily care to someone with a disability, medical condition, or an adult who is frail, may be eligible for some or all of the following benefits:
People with permanent and severe disabilities can apply for a card that enables a carer to accompany them when they use public transport. There are two different types of companion card:
When a cardholder buys a ticket for themselves at selected venues and facilities around South Australia, this card entitles the companion to free entry to the same event. This includes travel on public transport in metropolitan Adelaide.
With this card people who have severe and permanent impairments which limit their ability to use public transport independently can be accompanied by a carer, who travels free of charge on all Adelaide Metro bus, train and tram services.
Catalyst Foundation can assist with sourcing the relevant forms and with completing applications for those unable to do so.
