Catalyst Foundation is committed to supporting the wellbeing, visibility and inclusion of LGBTIQA+ people over 50 in South Australia. Our Information and Social Support for over-50s LGBTIQA+ Communities initiative combines social connection with targeted, trustworthy information designed to meet the unique needs of older LGBTIQA+ adults.
Each month, Catalyst hosts two community-led social programs:
• A monthly dinner on the first Thursday of each month at the Arab Steed Hotel, providing a relaxed, welcoming space for connection, conversation and community building.
• A monthly Book Group at Diverse-City on the first Wednesday of each month, offering a safe, inclusive environment to share ideas, explore queer literature and meet like-minded people.
Alongside these in-person programs, Catalyst produces a dedicated LGBTIQA+ over-50s newsletter, which continues to expand as its reach grows. The newsletter features social events, community programs, aged care reform updates, webinars, mental health supports, health information, surveys, resources and relevant news for older LGBTIQA+ South Australians. Subscribers receive monthly updates to stay informed, connected and supported.
Together, these initiatives strengthen community belonging, reduce social isolation, and ensure older LGBTIQA+ people have access to inclusive spaces and accurate, relevant information.
Our LGBTIQA+ Communities Programs Officer sends a monthly e-newsletter with information and news relating to our LGBTIQA+ activities, as well as inclusive programs, services and upcoming events.
This project aims to strengthen social connection, reduce isolation and improve access to trusted information for LGBTIQA+ people over 50. Expected outcomes include increased community participation through regular social events, greater awareness of local supports and aged-care options, and improved access to health and wellbeing resources tailored to older LGBTIQA+ adults.
The monthly newsletter is expected to become a central information hub, helping individuals stay connected to opportunities, services and community happenings. Ultimately, the project supports safer, more inclusive ageing by ensuring older LGBTIQA+ people feel seen, supported and empowered to make informed decisions about their wellbeing and future.
